What are hazardous medicinal products, and why do they matter for staff safety?

Hazardous medicinal products (HMPs) include a wide range of drugs used to treat cancer, autoimmune diseases, and other serious conditions. These medicines are often lifesaving for patients but can pose significant health risks to the healthcare professionals who prepare, administer, or dispose of them.

Exposure to HMPs, particularly cytotoxic and cytostatic drugs, can occur through inhalation, skin contact, or accidental spills. Over time, even low-level exposure has been associated with reproductive health problems, miscarriages, congenital abnormalities, and certain cancers. Laboratory and clinical studies have shown measurable traces of these substances in hospital environments, demonstrating how easily contamination can spread if safety measures are inadequate.

Protecting staff from hazardous exposure is not simply a regulatory requirement; it is a moral and professional duty. Implementing closed-system transfer devices (CSTDs), ensuring robust ventilation and engineering controls and delivering comprehensive staff training are all critical steps in preventing avoidable harm.

At the SHBN we work to raise awareness, promote evidence-based safety standards, and support the adoption of safer handling practices across UK healthcare settings. Our goal is to ensure that those delivering lifesaving treatments can do so without compromising their own health.
