The SHBN Launches the HMP Safety Podcast Series

The SHBN is thrilled to launch the HMP Safety Podcast Series; a platform for discussions on the risks of occupational exposure to Hazardous Medicinal Products (HMPs), featuring perspectives from researchers, policymakers and frontline healthcare workers.

In March 2026, the SHBN launched a joint campaign, Protecting Healthcare Workers: Safer Handling of Hazardous Medicinal Products, to raise awareness of the dangers of occupational exposure to hazardous medicinal products (HMPs). HMPs are widely used in healthcare, particularly in cancer treatment, and can pose serious risks to the staff who prepare, administer and dispose of them. Yet, the UK has no formal definition of HMPs, no nationally recognised list, and no standardised mandatory training for handling them, leaving the UK behind international standards, and putting those who protect us at risk every day.

The campaign aims to increase awareness of the risks associated with HMPs, advocate for clear national legislation, enforceable safety standards and the adoption of closed-system handling, reducing preventable harm to the healthcare workers who care for us all. As the latest addition to the campaign, the HMP Safety Podcast Series is hosted by Dr Paul Grime, Chairman of the SHBN for over 20 years and a consultant in occupational medicine.

Each episode explores a different aspect of HMP safety, from the evidence behind occupational exposure, to the policy gaps holding back reform, to the frontline experiences of those handling these substances every day.
