SHBN Webinar Safer Handling of Hazardous Medicinal Products: Evidence, Practice and Policy Change

We are delighted to share that our Safer Handling of Hazardous Medicinal Products Webinar: Frontline Pressures, Education and Culture webinar had over 100 attendees across a range of professions.

Attendees heard from two outstanding speakers:

• Sam Toland, Nurse Consultant in Cancer Care and Lead SACT Nurse, Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Trust
• Alison Simons, Senior Lecturer in Nursing and Midwifery at Birmingham City University

Sam Toland discussed the mounting pressures on SACT services, including rising cancer diagnoses, increasingly complex treatments, and an 8–10% year-on-year increase in activity, and how these pressures are driving greater contamination risk for nursing staff through overstretched units, variable PPE compliance, and a growing shift to subcutaneous drug administration.

Alison Simons presented longitudinal research demonstrating that, despite progress in education and training, the primary challenge has shifted from knowledge gaps to implementation failure and safety culture. Both speakers called for mandatory national standards, stronger governance, and system-level accountability in the handling of HMPs.
