BOPA and PASG publish joint statement on the Safer Handling of Hazardous SACT Drugs

Today BOPA and PASG publish a joint Position Statement on Safer Handling of Hazardous SACT Drugs, outlining a shared commitment to ensuring safe and effective practices in the preparation, handling, administration, and disposal of Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) and cytotoxic medicines. It highlights the need to protect both patients and pharmacy staff as a key priority in delivering high-quality oncology care.

The importance of national collaboration to reduce staff exposure to hazardous medicines through safer systems, appropriate equipment, and strong governance is paramount. Through further review and evidence gathering this can help to support proportionate, practical and sustainable improvements to safety standards across the UK.

Ensuring safer staffing and minimising exposure to hazardous medicines is the foundation of safe, sustainable healthcare.
